Job Advice? Not in College

By Julia Richardson – The job market currently isn’t the best for those who are graduating. In fact, even if your prospects look good and unemployment is down, getting a job is still a daunting task—not to mention exhausting.

Many universities simply tell you to attend a career fair or “join LinkedIn.” Sure, starting a LinkedIn account is good advice and a great way for you to start out on your job search. However, there are seven other very helpful tips that will help you on your search and hopefully help keep you from ripping your hair out in frustration.

  1. Reach out to those that you admire. These should be people that are in the field of your degree. You should look up their contact information and send them an email or you can tweet them. You can send them some of your work and ask them for some tips. You can also tell them that you admire them. You may be pleasantly surprised at how many will write you back in a positive way. This can also help you start a potential mentorship. Even if you happen to be rejected by them, still thank them for their consideration.   2. Think about cleaning up your social footprint. When you are looking for a job, you should think about making your social accounts look more professional. You shouldn’t erase your personality from your presence, just think about what tweets should be deleted and what pictures you have on your profile and what privacy settings you should utilize. Here are some great tips on how to clean things up.
  3. Network in person as well as online. Websites like Meetup.com and even RSVP-ing at in-person and social events can be very helpful as well. In addition to looking good on your resume, you will also be able to meet new people. However, you will also have some awkward conversations and a plethora of business cards. It’s all a part of the game.
  4. Use social media as much as you can. Obviously you can use LinkedIn, but you can also use other social accounts to help you while job hunting. Social profiles are in the top results when your name is Googled. Using these sites in order to find a job shouldn’t take up much of your free time.
  5. Build a portfolio. Having your portfolio and website is needed for any type of industry these days. You can build anything like an online resume, mobile game or even your YouTube channel. This helps you show what you’re passionate about and that you haven’t been just sitting around doing nothing.
  6. Create a professional email for yourself. Now that you have graduated from college you should create a more professional email account that you use for your resume and to give out as contact information to potential employers. If you are unsure how or what to use, try Google for work.
  7. Use calendars to your advantage. Use it to set a reminder for yourself to connect with your previous bosses which can help you be aware of new job opportunities. You can also utilize your calendar to set a certain day to conduct job searches when you won’t be interrupted.

Using these tips can help you when you begin your job search after graduating from college and give you a clear advantage in the job market. Many of them are simple to do, but often overlooked. Follow these tips and keep your hair. It’ll be worth it.
